Standing tall: Posture & Alignment
Your posture shapes everything about how you move through the world—and it's affecting you more than you realize.
When was the last time you noticed your neck hurting after scrolling through your phone, or your lower back aching after a day at your desk? These aren't random pains—they're direct messages from your body about alignment issues that impact your daily life. In this eye-opening exploration of posture and alignment, I break down what's really happening when your body falls out of its optimal position and why it matters for everything from pain management to athletic performance.
Drawing from personal experience and years working with corporate wellness programs, I share how morning movement dramatically changes how my body responds to screen time throughout the day. The connection is clear: our modern, sedentary lifestyle creates posture challenges unique to our generation. But contrary to popular belief, good posture isn't about rigid perfection—it's about awareness, balance, and creating sustainable habits.
You'll discover practical, actionable strategies to improve your alignment without turning into a robot. From optimizing your workspace to strengthening key muscle groups to performing simple posture resets throughout your day, these techniques can transform how you feel in your body. The science is compelling: proper alignment doesn't just reduce pain—it enhances your mood, boosts confidence, and improves physical performance.

Hey there, welcome back to the Inspired Life. I'm Deepika Rao and you're listening to Episode 7 in our season, all about understanding the human body. Today we are getting into something that affects literally everything you do how you sit, how you stand, how you walk and, yes, how you slouch on your couch binge-watching your favorite series. We are talking about posture and alignment and how they connect to pain, performance and even your confidence. Let's get into it. What is posture and alignment really? Let's simplify this. Posture is the way you hold your body when you're standing, sitting or lying down. Alignment is about how your bones stack up over one another. Think of it like your body's building blocks being properly arranged so that everything works efficiently. Good posture and alignment mean your body is in its default setting balanced, efficient and pain-free. Bad posture that's like using your phone with a cracked screen and dying battery. It still works, but not very well.
Speaker 1:Ever notice your neck hurting after scrolling on your phone for too long? That's what we call tech neck. Or maybe you get lower back pain after long hours at your desk? That's often due to a tilted pelvis or a weak core. You know like every morning I wake up early to go work out, and there are days I still wake up early because my body clock is set in that way, but I don't work out, for whatever reason. Right, it's planned. I don't feel up to it, I'm not feeling great, whatever it is. So the first thing I do after waking up, after you know, taking a little break and my meditation or whatever, whatever. Obviously, devices kick in. Either I'm on my phone, my laptop or TV. Now, the phone and laptop because I'm sitting on my couch. My next position isn't very great and I've noticed that even on the days that I do not do this early in the morning, but I am sitting on my laptop pretty much most of the day, because that's what my working day looks like. I pretty much sit on my laptop most days for six to seven, eight hours, and the mornings I work out. I have no pain in my neck, but the mornings I skip my workout. It hurts in the first few hours when I'm watching, looking at my phone or on in my laptop or watching tv early in the morning, but later in the day too, if I'm just working like my regular day, my neck hurts. So what did we understand? Basically, if I add some movement in the morning, it does help my posture and my alignment and hence doing the same activities that is, going looking into my phone or sitting on my laptop doesn't lead to any neck pain.
Speaker 1:Desk job, you know, for most of her life and I did train, work with a lot of corporate wellness programs this was one of the most common complaints I would come across. This is because in our urban setting, most of us are sitting in a chair all day long, right? So either it's at the desk at work, dining table at home or in your in a cab is just that same position again and again, which can lead to a lot of pain in your lower back and then, you know, runs through your spine, neck and so much more. So, apart from the examples I gave you, why does it matter? It matters more than you think. So let's bust a myth right away.
Speaker 1:Posture isn't about standing like a soldier 24-7. It's about how you move in your daily life, right? So pain. Poor posture puts stress on muscles and joints, leading to aches in the neck, back, hips and shoulders. What I just said Performance. If your body isn't aligned well, your muscles can't fire properly. That means less power, poor balance and higher injury risk, and also confidence. Studies have shown that how you hold yourself impacts how you feel. Upright posture is linked to better mood and more self-assurance. It's not about being rigid, it's about awareness. Small changes in how you sit, stand and move can lead to big shifts in how you feel. So how to improve posture and alignment without turning into a robot, of course? Here's the good news you don't need to walk around with a book on your head. Improving posture can be fun, practical and part of your daily life.
Speaker 1:So let's look at some tips. First of all, check your desk setup. Your screen should be at eye level, feet flat on the floor and shoulders relaxed. Add a cushion behind your lower back if needed. Then move often. Set a timer to stand, stretch or walk around every 30 to 45 minutes. Your body isn't designed to sit still for hours. Strengthen your core and glutes. These muscles help hold your spine in place. Exercises like bird dogs, glute bridges, deadlifts, squats and planks are great Practice posture resets. Stand tall, roll your shoulders back gently, tuck your pelvis and imagine a string pulling your head up. Do this a few times a day. Finally, foot awareness. Your feet are your foundation. Walk barefoot sometimes and work on spreading your toes and grounding evenly. Bonus tip Look at your reflection when you're brushing your teeth or passing a mirror. Use it as a mini check-in moment. Are you standing tall? Are your shoulders creeping up to your ears? Posture and alignment aren't just about looking good. They're about feeling good and moving better. The more you tune into how your body stacks and shifts, the more you'll notice improvements in your energy, strength and confidence.
Speaker 1:This was the end of our season on understanding our bodies. I won't say end, I'll say taking a break from it. The topic of understanding our body and how it works is immensely vast and there's so much I can go on about and which I will. But you know, in the fear of making this really boring for all of you, I'm going to take a break from talking about our bodies and going deeper into the science of living a healthier, stronger and happier life. We are going to take a break in this season and revisit this in the coming months. The next season is going to be about a brand new topic, which you'll know next week. Till then, this was it for this season of Understanding your Body. If today's episode got you sitting a little taller, share it with a friend, subscribe and drop a review. I'll see you in the next one. Until then, stand tall, stay curious and keep tuning into your body. This is Deepika Rao signing off.
